When I arrived Saturday morning, there was enough fog tha it was difficult to see the targets at 50 yards. By the 9:00 am start time the fog had burnt off and we had clear skies and very light winds. These light winds were pretty common for this range, but it makes it very difficult to get a reading on what that little wind is doing. This is a VERY difficult range if there are light winds.
I was told that the day before, when the out of town folks were practicing, the winds were terrible, almost to the point that practice was not worth the bother.
Due to the light turnout, it was decided to collapse the two day match into a single day. This made it a very full day of shooting, especially for a couple of our competitors who shot both rimfire and air guns. Even so, the match went very smoothly, and everyone seemed to have a good time. A lunch of Bratworsts was provided, which was very good, in my humble opinion.
I will ony acknowledge the overall winners and leave a blow-by-blow to Fred. Tom Guerin is the Rimfire Division National Champion for 1999, whomping on all of us by a sizable margin. Dan Lawton is the Air Power Division, Unlimited Class, National Champion for 1999, also winning by a wide margin. And Tom Guerin is the Air Power Division, Sporter Class, National Champion for 1999. In Air Gun Sporter Class, Tom was the only competitor, but since he shot at the same time as the other air gun and rimfire shooters, his scores count for record.
We congratulate Tom Guerin in setting two new USBR World Records in less than ideal conditions. His 239-6x score in Rimfire, Sporter Class and 247-6x score in Air Power, Sporter Classs both qualify as World Records. --jdw)

Match Description: Our first match of the year was, appropriately, on the first day of Spring, and it almost felt like it. I don't know if it was the balmy weather or cabin fever, but the turnout was GREAT!, with 21 competitors firing 52 targets. I was particularly pleased with the interest in airgun. They not only filled our 9 new firing points, they outnumbered the rimfires 11 to 10.
The star-of-the-day in rimfire was Butch Springer, who shot an excellent 3-gun agg of 718-12x, and also set a new USBR Sporter Record with 238-1x. This bested Ron Sundberg's old record of 237-5x shot at last year's Nationals.
In airgun, Ron Price fired a USBR World Record score of 244-4x in the Sporter Class. There are no official aggregates in airgun, but John Mickel fired a fine 3-match agg of 723-7x in Sporter Class with his Steyr. (Did anyone notice that the BB gun outshot the .22's)?? With my new Anschutz 2002, scores were only mediocre but consistent, which proves that I've got a lot to learn about wind doping with those dinky bullets.
The new season brought out a lot of new faces. I'd like to welcome Ken & Adele Watrous in their first year of rimfire benchrest competition. They have lots of enthusiasm, and I'm sure their scores will improve with experience. New airgunners include DuWayne Harrison. He borrowed a gun from me, and is all teeth & eyeballs to get one of his own. Greg Oskamp, who shot some good scores on his first outing...here's a kid to watch. Fred Amos, Jay Tether and Charly Bussom...all newcomers with no fancy rests or equipment. I hope they had as much fun as I did. Again, welcome to all, and I look forward to seeing you next month on April 17.

Weather was not all that great, unless you are a penguin, and many of them would have complained of the cold too. A couple locals figured no one would be crazy enough to shoot (and maybe the ammo would not even shoot at those temperatures), so attendance was pretty light. Maybe someday warm weather will show up, we have our fingers crossed.

The weather Gods continued to smile on our second match of the year. For that, I'm thankful because it doesn't happen that often here in the Northwest. We had another good turnout with 20 competitors firing 60 targets, and the airguns outnumbered the rimfires again. (If this continues, I'll have to build some more firing points).
Rimfire Highlights: Last month, I said Ken Watrous would improve with experience.. Well, he bought a new gun, and he's obviously been practicing because he won the 3-Gun Agg and came within 2 x's of tieing Larry Balestra's Custom Class record. Speaking of Larry, he was really smokin'-em until his trusty Rem 37 let him down in Unlimited, so he had to settle for 2nd in the 3-Gun. This was our first SOY tournament and the first Team match. The team score of 3550 was one of our best and a good start on the year.
Airgun Highlights: Last month, Ron Price set a new Sporter Class record, and today, everybody was gunning for him. I came within 1 x of a tie in match 1. In match 2, Rhonda Bennett upped the record to 245-3x.. (Rhonda paid us a welcome visit and proved that the Florida sun hasn't dimmed her shooting eye.) Ron fought back with a 246-5x in match 3, but there were not enough shooters for the score to count. So, let this be an example for all airgunners. There are records going begging in Custom & Unlimited Classes. All you need is 4 shooters in any match.
