    270, 1:10 Twist, best bullet?

About to trade for a 270 barrel, 1:10 twist and plan to shoot 130 VLDs or 140 accubonds from her. Is the 1:10 rate of twist appropriate for these wiegh bullets?

    thanks and Go Saints!

You are going to need a sharper rifeling twist than 1in10. Some 270s won't even shoot regular 150g boat tails with decent accuracy out of a one in 10 twist. Exactly how sharp a twist I am not exactly sure, maybe it can be worked out with Greenhills formula. Am not even entirely certain that tight twist 270 barrels are avaliable.

    Thumbs up

Jim, according to the Berger website, a 1:10 twist is good for any of their VLD bullets from 130 to 150 grains. My 270 Winchester Model 70 shoots bullets from 90 grains to 150 with good results. Tom

typically, 140gr in .277 has the highest BC. .495 and such is common. Bergers run pretty high BC across the board, comparative to other brands.

    Hope this helps.

1:10 twist will handle any .277" bullet you can buy off the shelf.

Cool Gonna try some Berger 140 VLDs today

Hornady 130 SST aren't very good out of my Mod 70 270WSM . Today if I don't get rained on I'll be trying the Berger 140 gr VLD using Mag pro and Re#17 powder. At the end of the day I'll be expecting some one to pin a medal on me.

If any one can get those long bullets to shoot in my 1 in 10 twist 270, I would allow them to kiss me and never mind about the medal!

Exclamation Gonna try some Berger 140 VLDs today

Well I shot those bad boys, using Magpro and Re#17 .My 10"twist barrel spins them just fine. 9grs less of Re#17 then Magpro produces a 100 fps faster then Magpro. Except for usual fliers I was able to get MOA at 100 yds.

130's I have had great success with the older soild base ballistic tips 1993-94 vintage for game and the Serria game king in 130 Both are very accurrate in my 270's
    I'm working on a 150gn load that's promising 58 gns of A3100 is pushing a150 Nosler (.495BC) 3100fps. I'm a not happy with the sd/es yet so I need some tweaking.
I have some Bergers loaded up but I have not shot them yet. Same goes for the 150sst. I have 7 of each loaded and when I get my crony fixed I will figure out which way I'll go from there.
Murphy does the barrel shoot anything well???
The 270 has a long powder column as well as being overbore. A magnum primer works wonders for this round with H4831.

Your Getting 3,100 FPS with a 150 gr bullet out of a 270 WCF ? Are you sure ?It takes a max load out of my 270 WSM to get 3150.

    NEVER EXCEED MAXIMUM LOADS

According to what I can find, your load of 58 grs AA3100, and a 150 gr nosler isd a 2 grain overload, and 300+ FPS over what max is listed. I dont know what length barrel, so maybe you can gain the velocity. Evidently you have gotten away with it so far !!! but do question the wisdom of putting out data that is an overload. It is even an overload dropping to 130 gr. but not quite as bad. Some of the data being put out on here reminds me of a song by Molly Hatchett "Flirting With Disaster"

I was having a hard time with his velocity claims. I have a hard time getting that with my 270 WSM. I've been pushing a 140gr Berger 3250 with 74grs of Magpro. Dang I wonder what IMR 7828 will do ?

Hodgdon data never has been worth a toot.
They sure re sell great powder, though.

I am getting such good results killing deer from 329 to 510 yards with 130 gr Nos Ballistic tip moly, that I can't complain.

I plan on trying VLDs for next year to see if I can become a 600 yard person.

    my 270

I know i am going to be castigated for this one!! well here it goes, my theory is to shoot what the rifle likes. im talking hunting accuracy not benchrest as this the factory and hybrid page. my 270 remington 7600 just loves 130 remington coreloc's and IMR4350 powder. this pump action can easily place 3 inside a quarter (coin that is) at 100 yds. minute of whitetail where i hunt and all have been one shot harvests fron 50yds to 200yds in woods and nearby fields. cant beat that as it tunes easy and knocks em down just as good as those fancy tipped and expensive bullets.
