This was the first day of the San Gabriel Valley Benchrest Shooters Four Gun Trials. It was one of the best days we have had a match, in a very long time. It was nice, cool, and there was little wind or mirage. Twenty four shooters competed for the trophies in two tough matches. Two range records and four screamers were shot during an intense six hours of competition.
The Unlimited Class match was started at exactly 08:30 A.M. Mike Marcelli set the standard for the day with an excellent 0.077” dot, in the center of the mothball, to win the first match. Mike received the Small Group trophy for the morning, with this nice group. Richard Mooers won the second match with 0.115”. George Raymond’s fine 0.088” group took the third match. Richard Mooers shot into a 0.083” bug hole to claim the fourth match. Rod Graham won the last match with 0.137”. The top five aggregates in the morning were George Raymond, 0.1688”, (excellent agg, George!), Mike Marcelli, 0.1884”, Richard Mooers, 0.1906”, Don Jackson, 0.2078”, and Daniel Moscaritolo with 0.2114”.
After a short lunch break we were ready to begin the Sporter Class. The wind picked up a little, the mirage was still barely evident, and the temperatures were in the high seventies / low eighties. A couple of shooters left, but we had others show up to take their place at the line.
Don Jackson decided to give everyone something to try to beat, his match winning target was measured at 0.090”. No one was able to shoot into a smaller group, so Don was the winner of the Small Group trophy in the afternoon. Keith Longerot had 0.185” to win the second match. Richard Mooers shot 0.190” to take the third match. Gene Deloney’s 0.165” group won the fourth. Mike Marcelli’s 0.175” gave him the fifth match. The top five aggregates were Mike Marcelli, 0.2164”, Don Jackson, 0.2486”, Gene Deloney, 0.2494”, John Civitello, 0.2742”, and Keith Longerot with 0.2796”.
The top five Two Gun aggregates for the day were Mike Marcelli, 0.2024”, Don Jackson, 0.2282”, George Raymond, 0.2299”, Gene Deloney, 0.2345”, and Richard Mooers with 0.2460”. These marksmen will be in the running for the Four Gun Trophies when we hold the second half of the trials in July. The rest of us will just have to see if we can take the “wood” away from them.
