Gary Grove's ARA 2500

Here is a picture of Gary's 2500 target that he shot at the Borden, IN range this past Saturday. It was a clean target, with no plugs needed, similar to Darrel Barnes' target. It probably would also have scored as a world record 250-25X if it had been shot on an IR or RBA target.

I watched Gary shoot this card, not only did he not fold, but his last 9 shots didn't even get close to touching the blue ring. He just got stronger as he finished the target. It was a pleasure to watch the dual between Gary and Kirk Gaston, they both were in a zone.

Another picture of Gary's target.

Here is another picture of Gary's target shot the way it was hanging. He shot it left to right then from top to bottom.

Gary's rifle information

Gary is a top notch shooter, competitor, and maybe even better than that, a super person. He is very deserving of his 2500 target. He made it awfully tough on us locals last year and I don't see that changing any this year. Keep it going Gary and you'll make us all better shooters.

Gary really had it cookin' on his 2500. He only shot 4 sighters, but of course they were all 100's too. That was one beautiful target!!!!!

Gary's rifle information:
Turbo Action
Broughton 4 Groove 16 Twist Barrel
16 oz Tuner
Kelby Stock
Smithed by a fellow from Borden, IN
Eley Red Box Ammo from the #4 Machine

Ramblings of a Rimfire Benchrest Gunsmith

My friends:

I have been blessed by God to have had folks produce ARA 2500's with my work, but until last Saturday I had not gotten to see them perform those feats in person.

A feller makes a sad mistake if he believes there is money to be made, making Rimifre Benchrest guns, at least I ain't figured out how to do it.

What does drive me, and others, is the success folks have with ones work and the thrill of making folks happy.....when a customer calls, sometimes years later, and says they won a big championship or set a new world record, that is the joy I derive for my efforts making these little guns. The money folks paid me has long ago been spent, but those calls and letters are what makes the whole thing priceless.

The second target had just started at Borden....I was grading targets with Susanne.....along about half way through the relay, I think it was Cabin Mike who slipped over and whispered to me, " Gary's clean through the first 15 bulls"......Susanne had to take over the scoring as I had to slip over to my turck, parked about 50 feet behind the firing line, to look through my old 10 power scope......man, it look like a bunch of fish eyes! I couldn't watch, too nervous, so I went back to help Susanne with the scoring....

About 5 minutes later, Cabin Mike slips over and whispers " Bill, Gary's clean through 20 bulls".....Susanne got stuck doing the targets again as I had to look.....

Now folks, if I ever had 5 bulls in a row, I'd figure a way to blow it....I ain't much of a shooter, especially under pressure.

I went back to scoring......but had an eye on the firing line....every spotting scope behind the lines had folks viewing.....a couple of minutes later I saw a bunch of hand go up in the air....folks were still shooting so no one hollered or nothing.....a couple of seconds later I saw Gary Grove get up, turn around, put his hands in the air, and, although I could not hear what he said, I could read his lips....he said " no plugs".....

I left Susanne grading targets again and went to my truck and looked through my old scope.......Gary was right, even through my old 10 power, the target was completely clean, plug free......

Gary, congratulations. And thank you Lord for allowing me to be present to see Gary shoot his target.

Copngratulations to all the other shooters for their awesome work....when the tenth place competitor aggs almost 2100, you know some big league shooting took place.

Thank you my friends for allow me to ramble, your friend, Bill Calfee
