Congrats to David Schmidt and I noticed that Macky, Fred J, and Dorothy shot well too. Marion and Don have been bull-fighting for the A-Line and they need to be commended for the competition between them. How many shooters came and what were the aggs if anyone knows?

Just us 7 that Fred listed was the total attendance. The last few tournaments I've attended the number of shooters has been disappointing. I know that this subject has been kicked around endlessly but the lack of participants is alarming to myself, at least in this neck of the woods. I guess it's what everyone wants out of something that really matters, but depending on the situations will determine if there's even somewhere to shoot at in the coming years at least in this area. Understand that I just finished my second year of competing so I'm now getting the feel for the game and the enviroment/people around it. At first when I stumbled upon this game and gave it a try and really said that this is fun and enjoyable, puts one's mind to work in order to compete ect..... I figured has to be a lot of folks doing it. I'd say that the biggest surprise for me living in Texas and the millions of folks who live here with a very large # of them shooting sportmen and women, there's probably less than 50 active shooters competing in the ARA, IR50/50 associations. Heck take Boerne if Don and Marion don't drive over from out of state there's 5 of us in the tournament???? Two weeks ago in Ennis on Sunday at the Tournament there's 7 of us with myself being the only one from within the state of Texas other than the match director. I'll probably offend some, and yes I know that we all have things come up and need to attend to, but a lot of these small clubs are counting on these tournaments to bring in a few dollars to pay some bills, and need the locals to support them. Oh well I guess one can just say it's the economy for I'm the first to agree it takes a lot of money if one does want to compete in this sport.

Les,
Been there done that. I agree that it can be downright disappointing to have low attendance even at a tournament. Running matches at Wabash Wildlife and Sportsman's Association for the third year this year was a daunting task before this season started. I don't know what I did to make things better but they were extremely better than last year. I averaged some 6 to 7 shooters last year for each event. This year was a shade over 16. I did run the Indiana State Tournament that was incredible for attendance (the largest of ARA for the season I believe). My suggestion would be to advertise on here more often and keep it near the top of the page for tournaments. Try to get the Texas State Tournament. Make an effort to e-mail, call or visit other clubs and keep shooters informed of the upcoming tournament. That is all I did different this year. Texas is a big state I know. It is ashamed that the in-state shooters didn't support the matches at Boerne. Don't be too discouraged yet. Things can change next year. Best of luck. You brought up a topic that really needs discussed by all match directors of all disciplines of RF Benchrest. Thanks for doing that.

Thanx for the info Carp. Although I'm not the MD at the Boerne Club I do intend on trying to help the folks who run the club. I agree with your advise of getting the word out and have been giving it some thought. I also agree that it wouldn't hurt if the local, at least by Texas Standards, if the MD for all the clubs within the greater Texas area talk and see by scheduling etc... how they can help each other out. Great to hear about the success you've seen at your club and don't be surprised if you hear from us down in this neck of the woods to discuss exactly how you did it.

Co-Operation

Les, I have to agree with you. Many ranges do not get the support of the other area clubs. Many times over the 15 years Dorothy and I have been involved, when we have traveled to other ranges, that we see very few that actual live in the area the range is located. Often, we look down the line and see the same faces, we see at our own range. That ended a few years ago, and now making ends meet makes it harder to keep a range open. Maybe it because some of us are in kind of out of the way places. This year we made it a point to not travel to ranges that didn't support our range. I know that's sellfish, but I think that's a two way street.

At least in ARA it's pretty much the same thing every year. Attendance drops after the nationals. Everybody else just kinda sits back and watches the A-line and waits on the next year.

You also have the rule that you can have Myrange #1 and Myrange#2 and shoot every two weeks and at least two tournaments so there's no use to travel. Not saying it's a bad rule, but it's there and it takes away from the need to travel to other ranges. Every rule has a consequence. That's what I love about rules. Make one and watch how things changes as people take advantage of it.

FredJ,
did that before and had good results from attending those ranges. You brought up a point that needs to be discussed.

Madrox,
I've been there and done that in 4 years of competition and it seems that club #1 and Club #2 doesn't work to well for those that WANT it. Otherwise the shooters themselves just go where they want to go (or NOT) and that is the problem. You bring up a point that also needs to be discussed.
