40x question

i have an old (1955) civilian heavy barrel
40x with no safety. the bolt release is
inside the back on the left side of the bolt.
you have to stick something ( i use a plastic
piece) in there and push down a spring loaded
piece to release the bolt. i was thinking about
getting a jewell trigger. i looked and they have
them without safety or bolt release is that the
one i want. i don't mind the way it works now.
just want a little lighter trigger. thanks for any
help. tom

If I were you I would definitely get the Jewell with the bolt release. Cost a little more, but it's worth it. The one without the bolt release will work.
Does yours have a factory trigger and no bolt release? All of my 40X's ahd the bolt release in front of the trigger, top of the trigger shoe just like a 700 Rem. But, mine were all made on 700 actions. I thought they all had bolt realese though?

no it's an old one i guess 722 action. no bolt release except
for the manual one. a friend of mine just changed his out
and his has the release in front of the trigger like a 700.
i don't know if there's some linkage required that i don't have in place.
or if the triggerguard would have to be modified. i'm kinda used to it
the way it is. just wondered if people with the jewell trigger
just got the plain one if they had one like mine. thanks for
the reply.
and thanks for the offer on the canjar trigger i'll keep that in
mind.

I'd get the one with the bolt release. The Jewell with a bolt release has a littel lever mounted on the side of the trigger assembly that runs up to the bolt release. and when you press it it accuates the bilt release, and it's in the same place a 700 bolt release is, right at the top front of the trigger shoe. If I coul d post pic's I think I ahve a picture of one here somewhere. But I cannot.

The Jewell with the bolt release works fine, but keep in mind for the older 722 style you will probably need to trim down the trigger shoe in order for it to fit inside the trigger guard.

i don't have a 37 but didn't the bolt release on those work

Tom,

No the 37 release worked differently. All 40X's should have left the factory with a bolt release and safety however it was a common practice to remove them. However, that is not the question. Its simply a matter of personal preference. I've never had a bolt release on any 40X and never felt it an inconvienence.

hmmm i thought some came without any release, but were
like mine. now i am curious. i'm not itchin' to rig something
up that works fine now as far as the release goes. a little
lighter trigger might be an improvement though. i went to
sight in my deer rifles the other day and after these lighter
triggers a 2 lb. one makes you think the safeties always on.

My small experience on this subject has to do with a 40X (straight bolt low serial #) and one 40X B (angled bolt,govt marked) no safety's that both came as custom rifles with Jewell triggers, (one with bolt release/one without). Then I acquired an nice old 40X commercial rifle that arrived with the 40X factory trigger (with safety) which after the Jewell's was terrible. I was able to look at both the Jewell's at Dan Ks and chose the bolt release version for approx $10 more. On a range that requires that bolts be removed I prefer the bolt release which keeps my pocket knife in my pocket. The older action has a slightly different bolt release design, but both use the same Jewell. The 1.5 oz will spoil you. Regards

Tom to answer your question above I have two custom 40X's, both are setup the same as yours and one has a Shilen trigger and the other has a Jewell.
They work fine and I don't mind that I have to use a small tool, in my case a pocket knife, to release the bolt.

i use a blade from a nail clipper.
well i checked the trigger with a lyman electronic guage
it's pullin at 6.5 ozs. took it out of the stock to get some
pictures and noticed there's no place for a bolt release.
i noticed small writing on the side it says m.h. canjar
denver colo. and 40.3 on the same left side on the right
side just a number 47. i don't know a thing about these.
what have i got and how light can i adjust it. i bought
this gun about 17 years ago at a small gunshop, i met
the guy who owned it before and he said he had never
done a thing to it. he really wanted a 52 sporter when he
found one he put this up for sale. he was going to try
altering this into a squirrel rifle until he found the 52. i took
some pics. i'll put them up after i run them through paint
shop pro and adjust the light. any help thanks. anyone know
how to adjust these?

Tom,
You have a Canjar trigger. There should be another letter behind the 3 that would indicate a 2 lever or 3 lever. If you have it down to 6oz its safe to assume its a three lever trigger and that is really about its safe limit. So if you want lower it best to replace as you had planned.
Adjustment is straight forward. Screw in bottom in front of trigger blade is weight of pull.
Not trying to be smart but Canjar suggested not going farther, he probably has a point.
