dating a rem 40-x

( i know little about 40-x's. purchase was based on it being a single shot action)
the ad listed it as a 40-xbbr
serial number is 0536xxB
bbl marks are WC
blued action, ss bbl, 27.5"
300 win mag
wood stock inlet on the underside for an adjustable handstop
the std id from bbl marks leaves the year of assembly wide open
1956,1982,2008
i so not know if a '56 bbl would not be used until the '60's ???
what say you ??

The above started on late 6 digit/7 digit 700 receivers.

The 6/7 digit receivers pre-date the A pre-fix serial numbered receivers starting in '73-ish.

The bolt lock safety cut in the bolt body was dropped when the X Mark trigger groups were introduced in 2006.

I had one of those in 25-06. It was a 40x Rangemaster with a 27.5 inch Stainless Steel barrel. It was a beautiful rifle and shot reasonably well.

I removed the barrel and chambered it in 6BR to make my first BENCHREST Rifle. I took the barrel and put it on a Remington 700 BDL that was previously a 270. I then took that to a gun show and sold it.

Later I took the whole thing apart to true the action. That is when I found out that the machine work on a 40x was no better, or worse, than any other 700.

i took it apart after deciding i was going with a new bbl.
the lugs in the recvr have furrows...not a flat surface. you can see the furrows continue past the holt lug engagement.
i was hoping but no more.
the bolt now matches the lugs.
this was suppose to be an inexpensive target rifle( not full blown br).
do i resurface both or just shoot it as is??
